Datoga Tribe

The Datoga, also known as Mang’ati in Swahili, are a semi-nomadic, Nilotic-speaking agro-pastoral people living mainly around Lake Eyasi and in the Manyara and Singida regions of northern Tanzania. Known for their blacksmithing skills, they craft spears, arrowheads (often for the Hadzabe), and bracelets for tourists.

Originally from southern Sudan and western Ethiopia, the Datoga settled in the Lake Eyasi area about 3,000 years ago. They follow a pastoral lifestyle deeply connected to their spiritual beliefs, with ceremonies that include traditional dances and songs. They maintain animistic traditions and respect for ancestors.

Visitors can explore both Datoga and neighboring Hadzabe communities in the same region.

The Hadzabe are a traditional hunter-gatherer society, meaning they rely solely on hunting wild animals and gathering plants, fruits, and roots for sustenance.
